Whats the first thought you have when you wake up? What is the first thing you see? How can these simple things affect your day? For me, they had a tremendous effect. Up until recently, I have never realized how much so. My daily routine consisted of waking up, thinking about all these stresses the day is going to hold, sometimes foggy headed from drinking the night before. I’d lay there thinking about how awesome it would be just to lay in bed all day. I’d get up, get a shower, drink a bunch of coffee, get to work, put on an enthusiastic face and push through the day. I’d get home, eat an unhealthy meal, have a few drinks, watch TV and go to bed. Wake up repeat. Typical right? This was my routine. Call it what you will. I thought I was pleased with this until I realized how unhappy it was making me. I was waking up miserable, my thoughts were contrary, I was wired off coffee all day long, was drinking to become unwired, and my diet sucked. I decided to take action. I’m not going to jump into all the actions I am currently taking just yet, I want to just touch on daily inspiration.
The first thing I started doing when I wake up is giving my 4-month-old son a hug and a kiss, pull a few smiles out of him and change his diaper, that right there is enough to get the positive thought process rolling. After this I usually hit the bathroom, yes I know TMI, but I made it a point to make sure that when I leave my room in the morning, the first thing I see is something that moves me, something that makes me want to tackle the day. I found the perfect piece on Amazon. I hung it right above my toilet so even if I have a horrible morning I am forced to read it every day.

Work for the common good
Be the change you want to see in the world
If that doesn’t get your day going in the right direction, then nothing will. I’m eventually going to try and tackle one item each week from the above list. Another daily action I added to my list was reading a little bit before my day starts and when my day is over. In the morning I usually read a chapter of non-fiction, usually a business or self-help book. Currently, I’m working on “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson. I will write up on this in a later post. At night I steer away from anything serious, I am a massive fan of Fantasy and Horror Books (currently almost finished with a re-read of The Lord of the Rings). I also picked up a comic book habit over the past few years (if you can’t have some fun in life what is the point), I’m currently tackling a Batman Series, The Court of Owls, from DC. The books in the morning are a great way to get yourself inspired to kick ass during the day, and the fiction at night is a great way to relax and get your imagination rolling. I also try to read essential articles from the Wall Street Journal throughout the day to keep up to date on my investments and current events. This, in turn, has also pretty much cut my TV watching down to almost zero, which is incredible, considering myself and my partner both were Netflix binge watchers.
These few changes have been making my days substantially better from a motivation and drive standpoint. Try to add some inspiration to you daily life and see the difference!!
