Old Before Your Time

Let’s talk music today, well technically how lyrics correlate to certain things we do in life. I am a huge fan of folk/Americana style music, I could kill people for hours listening to Joni Mitchell angelic voice or Lester Flatts and Earl Scruggs fingerpick, but we won’t get too into that today. I want to discuss a specific song I head this morning by Ray Lamontagne. The song is on the Album “God Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise” which in itself is fantastic, the name of the song is “Old Before Your Time.” Here is a youtube video of the song and the lyrics below:

When I was a younger man lookin’ for a pot of gold
Everywhere I turned the doors were closin’
It took every ounce of faith I had to keep on keepin’ on
And still I felt like I was only losin’
I refused then like I do now to let anybody tie me down
And I lost a few good friends along the way
I was raised up poor and I wanted more
And maybe I’m a little too proud
Lookin’ back I see a kid who was just
Afraid, hungry and old before his time
Through the years I’ve known my share of broken hearted fools
And those who couldn’t choose a path worth taking
There’s nothin’ in the world so sad as talking to a man
Who never knew his life was his for makin
Ain’t it about time you realize? It’s not worth keepin’ score
You win some, you lose some and you let it go
What’s the use of stacking on every failure, another stone
Till you find you’ve spent your whole life building walls,
Lonely and old before your time
It took so long to see
That truth was all around me
Now the wren has gone to roost and the sky is turnin’ gold
Like the sky my soul is also turnin’
Turnin’ from the past, at last and all I’ve left behind
Could it be that I am finally learnin’?
Learnin’ that I’m deserving of love and the peaceful heart
I won’t tear myself apart no more for tryin’
I’m tired of lyin’ to myself, tryin’ to buy what can’t be bought
It’s not livin’ that you’re doin’ if it feels like dyin’
Cryin’, growin’ old before your time
Cryin’, growin’ old before your time

So, what is Ray trying to tell us? Well, first off he is saying that hustle is necessary for any success, but the more profound message is much more critical. What he is saying is don’t surpass the things that matter in life for success. Take your time, because anything good doesn’t come overnight. Don’t miss out on the things that you won’t get back. Baseball games, Birthday Parties, Family Get Togethers, Dance Recitals. Don’t miss your kids grow, don’t neglect your family and friends. Along with success, these things are vital for a balanced life. Have you heard the old saying it’s lonely at the top? It only is if you don’t get there the right way. You can have all the money in the world, but if you don’t have love, happiness, and friendship than it’s all in vain.
One thing I have learned from reading about Mindfulness is this, we so often focus on the future without really looking at what is right in front of us, hence the song title “Old Before Your Time.” When we focus too much on the future, we don’t see what is happening right now, because we are putting all our energy on things that don’t or may never exist. If we focus on what is happening right now, it allows us to build a future, step by step with the tools, relationships and situations we currently face.  To use an analogy, it’s almost like expecting a tree to grow without planting a seed. We must plan for the future, but we must make it happen today.
So moral of this quick blog post, you need to hustle, but hustle in the present. Focus on things happening right now. Essential items, as these are all keys to your success. Ray’s lyrics whether intentional or not are a perfect example of how and how not to live mindfully.

Let’s get the conversation going below guys! Any Ray Lamontagne fan’s? Any stories about succeeding while not neglecting? I want to hear it!
