Floating Your Worries and Stress Away!
Ever feel like you want to escape the world, your mind, your body, your spouse or whatever else is weighing you down, or perhaps you feel you need to relax but can’t find the time? Then you should float. Seriously!
For those of you not familiar with floating, its a form of sensory deprivation. For those of you who don’t know what that sensory deprivation is I’ll let dictionary.com explain:
a process by which someone is deprived of normal external stimuli such as sight and sound for an extended period of time, especially as an experimental technique in psychology.
So basically, it’s shutting out all your senses, except for smell, because well that is almost impossible.
How is Floating Sensory Deprivation?
When you float, you are placed inside a sizeable egg-shaped container called a float pod. The float pod is inside its own room as well, separate from the business it is located in. The room is soundproof and sealed off from outside light, the pod itself, when closed also adds an extra layer of sound and light proofing. When you are ready to begin floating you talk to a person via intercom, you shut the door on the pod and let them know when you are prepared for your experience to start. The light inside the pod room is usually on a timer. Within a few seconds to minutes the light goes out, and you are in complete darkness. You also are provided with ear plugs; our facility uses a wax type plug. This deprives you of hearing. The float itself, deprives you of touch to an extent, your floating, so yes you feel the water but if you stay still you won’t feel anything else.The best way for me to describe floating is losing touch with reality for the hour you are in the pod. Total darkness, total silence, hovering in nothingness. It sounds scary, but the only way I can describe it is sleeping while you’re awake. Pretty freaking awesome right?
How Does Floating Work?
The science behind floating is quite simple. The float pod has roughly 10 inches of water inside of it, dissolved in the water is approximately 1000 lbs of Epsom salt. This creates a buoyancy higher than the Dead Sea. The water in a float tank is kept in the 90-degree range and is continuously circulated through a filter when not in use (for all my germaphobes). See, simple right?
What Are the Benefits of Floating?
Floating has a wide array of benefits for both physical and mental health. Physically it is known to decrease pain, improve sleep, increase energy, improve cardiovascular health, improves sleep quality, aids in physical recovery from injury. It also can improve stress and anxiety, enhance creativity and focus and is a great meditation aid. Epsom salt is also loaded with magnesium which helps with lymph drainage, aids in tryptophan to serotonin conversion (which increases mood), and helps improve a whole slew of other ailments from chronic fatigue to PMS.
My Experience with Floating
So I am an anxiety ridden person with a little bit of claustrophobia, so I was skeptical. I figured I’d last 5 minutes and say no more. I was wrong. I made it my whole 20-minute trial session without an ounce of claustrophobia or anxiety, as a matter of fact, it was an incredibly relaxing experience. Due to the darkness and the floating sensation you don’t like you are inside a small space, it feels like you are floating around in an endless expanse.
The relaxation factor was fantastic. I only did twenty minutes but came out feeling less stress and refreshed from the day. I wish I had time to do the entire hour because I can imagine the relaxation benefits that would come with it. All in all, it was a fantastic experience, and I would recommend to anyone looking for a new way to relax or unwind.
